Tooth decay is where plaque builds up on localised areas of the teeth. The plaque generates acid from sugars in the mouth which decays the enamel of the teeth. Thorough gentle brushing removes this plaque.
Tooth erosion is where acidic drinks affect the whole surface of the teeth. The acid causes the enamel to soften. Brushing teeth straight after an acidic drink can actually cause more harm. Water will help rinse away the acid.
Often teeth will develop poorly because of such things as thumb sucking, or accidents. During growth the teeth are vulnerable.
